A learning journey…

Helping things go well…

Connection and interaction can sometimes feel turbulent, chaotic, occasionally like swimming against the current. But there’s another way: SPIRAL UP for profoundly different interactions, outcomes, and impact.

The SPIRAL starts with a simple idea.  When we focus on how to help things go well, and hold the bigger picture, we navigate challenges with more ease, clarity and influence.  Instead of reacting to what has gone wrong, we notice what’s happening in this moment and adjust.  This flexibility keeps us grounded, connected, and aligned with what truly matters.

The Spiral is our compass for transformation. When understood and applied, it becomes the leverage that shifts how we relate, to ourselves, to others, and to the challenges we face. Through this lens, conversations deepen, connections strengthen, and what once felt impossible begins to change. Transform the interaction, and you transform the outcome. Transform the relationship, and you transform everything.

How do you see this working for you in your conversations?

Building connection through 8 foundational skills

1
Description

Breathe, Be Present & Observe

What it means: Calming your emotions, focusing your mind clearly, and precisely, noticing what is actually going on (on the surface and beneath). Making sure you are completely focused on the present and the person.

What it's not: Emotionally charged, distracted, disinterested, giving advice without seeking first to understand.

Description

Ask more great Questions

What it means: Getting curious means slowing down to understand before seeking to be understood. It’s about questioning our mindset, perspective, and assumptions so we can see a more complete picture. It also invites dialogue, creating space for others to contribute, collaborate, and co-create.

What it's not: Making statements and over-arguing your posing questions to confirm your assumptions rather than understand more.

3
Description

Outcome Orientation

What it means: Maintaining focus on the desired end result, rather than getting side-tracked by symptoms, specific issues or preferred solutions. It emphasises the ‘Why’ or shared goal whilst remaining adaptable in how to get there.

What it's not: too narrow a focus and becoming fixated on problems, rigid solutions or individual preferences, losing sight of the bigger picture and shared goals

Description

Next Steps to The ONE Thing

What it means: Avoiding stalling, misunderstandings and ambiguity as it involves clear, actionable and realistic actions that move things forward with purpose and momentum, helping to maintain clarity and accountability.

What it's not: vague, reactive or overly ambitious actions that lead to confusion, stalled progress and/or a lack of follow through.

Say it in Another Way

What it means: Recognising that communication is not just about intent, but about impact, and how others receive and interpret your message matters. How you choose to frame something can significantly influence how it is received and how others respond.

What it's not: Inflexible, ambiguous, inflammatory messages which can be misconstrued, misunderstood, create resistance and can result in missed connection.

6
Description

Encourage, Affirm & Stand Tall

What it means: Building confidence in yourself and others by offering genuine support, recognising strengths and holding space with presence and belief. It is about creating a positive, open environment where people feel seen and capable.

What it's not: Diminishing energy, being overly critical, hesitant or disengaged and not noticing what is going well, which can erode confidence and weaken collective momentum.

7
Description

See The (Whole) Person

What it means: Looking beyond roles, behaviours or immediate performance to recognise the full humanity, potential and context of each individual. It involves empathy, curiosity and respect for the complexity each person brings.

What it's not: reducing people to labels, tasks or problems, overlooking their story, strengths and capacity for growth.

Description

Connect & Build Rapport

What it means: Creating trust and mutual understanding through genuine interest, empathy and adaptable communication. It lays the foundation for collaboration, openness and shared progress.

What it's not: Being inflexible and not adapting your style, staying distant or transactional which can lead to mistrust, misalignment and missed opportunities for meaningful connection. This is often a significant contributor to conflict.

The map
